Zachary Lovato, D.O., was always drawn to the sciences in school, but during a college anatomy class at the University of Central Oklahoma, he became intrigued with understanding the human body. The class inspired him to pursue medical school and a career as a physician.
Growing up in Yukon, Oklahoma, Dr. Lovato was raised by his parents alongside his younger brother and sister. He’s the only one in his family to graduate college, receiving his B.S. in nutrition and dietetics before going on to attend Oklahoma State University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. He then went on to complete his orthopaedic surgery residency at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo, Ohio, where he discovered a passion for spine surgery.
“When I was doing my rotation as an orthopaedic resident, working on spine cases and correcting deformities, I found I really enjoyed the work,” he shares. “Like my anatomy class, it captured my interest in how I could help people. Orthopaedic surgery offers instant gratification. You can help change a person’s life immediately.”
Dr. Lovato had found his specialty. He finished his residency and went on to complete a fellowship in adult deformity and spinal reconstruction surgery at the Sonoran Spine Center in Tempe, Arizona.
Now he’s excited to join the team at El Paso Specialty Hospital and the El Paso Specialty Physicians Group. He relocated to El Paso to start work at the hospital in August, where he applies his skills as an orthopaedic spine surgeon in both minimally invasive procedures and traditional surgeries to help patients correct spine issues and regain their quality of life.
“Everyone I met on the El Paso Specialty Hospital staff was extremely friendly and I look forward to working with them,” says Lovato. “After seeing the hospital’s amenities, and its workflow from pre-op to post-surgery, I can tell it’s an excellent, efficiently run hospital.”
When he’s not at the hospital or in surgery, Dr. Lovato enjoys spending time outdoors — fishing, hunting, hiking, or doing water sports. He also loves to travel when he has the chance. If you meet Dr. Lovato, ask him about one of his favorite trips, the time he went to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic.
